The Dartmouth Common Oven is a volunteer-run, wood-fired community oven. Each week, we host Open Ovens — free, public events where neighbours come together to share food and good company. No registration required. Just bring your ingredients and show up.
Open Ovens
Our volunteers have a hot fire going. You bring the food; we handle the fire.
Please check our social media pages for the most up-to-date schedule and any weather-related cancellations.
Weekly Schedule
- Thursdays starting July 9 | 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM (Made possible thanks to the wonderful student team with the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission!)
- Saturdays | 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
What to Expect
The oven is an outdoor site in Dartmouth Common. At the space you'll find:
- Stainless steel countertops for food prep
- Public picnic tables for eating
- A porta-potty on-site
- Running water via an outdoor tap during peak summer months (note: water may be off early and late in the season)
All pets must be leashed. Alcohol is not permitted in the municipal park.
Come ready to enjoy the atmosphere, be patient while things cook, and ask our volunteers if you have questions — that's what they're there for.
Food
Pizza is a crowd favourite, but our wood-fired oven welcomes all kinds of flatbreads and quick-cook meals.
- Pizzas, pitas, and flatbreads can go straight into the oven.
- Any other dish must go into a cast-iron skillet or be securely wrapped in heavy-duty foil to keep the oven stone clean.
Because this is a shared space, if the oven is busy, larger or slower-cooking items may need to wait so that everyone gets a fair turn.
Food tips:
- Fresh pizza dough or par-baked crusts work best. Don't bring frozen pizzas, ready-to-bake pizzas made with raw grocery-store dough, or pizzas designed to cook in a pan.
- The oven cooks very quickly — only bring toppings that are already cooked or safe to eat raw.
- We have communal flour on-site to help keep dough from sticking.
