The Dartmouth Common Oven is run entirely by volunteers — people who tend the fire, welcome visitors, help keep the space safe and inviting, and keep the organization running. Volunteering is a great way to contribute to your neighbourhood and get to know the people who live here.
Training
All volunteers complete our community training pathway before running an Open Oven on their own:
- Attend a Training Session — Learn the essential safety guidelines, wood-firing techniques, and hosting basics.
- Shadow a Mentor — Complete a shift alongside an experienced volunteer during a live Open Oven to get hands-on practice.
After training, you'll know how to safely open the equipment shed, build and manage the fire, ready the oven stone for cooking, and close everything up at the end of the day.
